When Nothing Else Could Help

27My Friend,
5 words: I have got a testimony. It is a true and yet very fulfilling thing when one comes to the point in their life where they can really testify about the goodness of God in the land of the living. Many times persons in the body of Christ don’t take the needed time to testify to others about their situation. However, there is great power in the testimony. So here’s my story…

On a recent summer Saturday the church in which I Pastor, New Bethel AME Church, hosted a Family and Friends cookout and fun day at one of our local parks. The day was progressing wonderfully. There were so many families represented and everyone seemed to be having a great time. The grills were going, the crabs were boiling, and fellowship was awesome amidst the back drop of the raging waters in the Splash Zone and the quiet serene of the lake. This time of food, fun, and fellowship was a much needed time for my church family. It would seem that the weeks preceding this event were great evidence that everyone needed a place to just relax, all while having a good time.

Somewhere in the course of walking young folk back and forth to the Splash Zone my fiancée and I decided to take some time away from the crowd to go pedal boating in the lake. We walked over to the dock and to our surprise, there was no one waiting. After receiving the final clearance and lifejackets from the only employee insight, my fiancée and I attempted to board the boat. As I stepped in the boat, the employee, my fiancée, and I noticed something strange…the boat was not docked! What now?

As one foot was on the dock and the other foot was in the boat, I felt the gap getting bigger. The single employee went into a state of shock. I recount him saying, “this has never happened before.” Then I fell. My body came crashing down between a small wedge between the boat and the dock. No one screamed. No one shouted. And this is where most of it becomes a blur for me. I am told that immediately my fiancée lays down on the dock and begins to reach for me. Her small and fragile arms began to attempt to lift me, to no great avail. The young employee was in such shock at these events that he begins to stand on the side of dock in a catatonic state, which equates to him not being of any help in the rescue.

I am told that I began to panic, thinking to myself what have I gotten into today. I am even told that I yelled to my fiancée to let me go! Wow. A member’s daughter is passing by and she immediately yells for her mother to come help. Her mother then yells for her husband. This man, who had just been to the hospital the week previous to have ruptured discs in his back replaced, lays down on the dock and begins to lift his Pastor up to safety. The white shorts that I had on were covered in thick green algae. My sunglasses, trusty usb, blackberry, and watch all submerged in the murky water. But I had life.

On the side of the dock I lay gathering my thoughts. Then a woman from another gathering comes over and says to me, “you ought to be thankful because I saw you in that water, but I also saw that sign that said Alligators.” I did not believe that it was my time to die. I believe that life is full of rich lessons and all I can do is glorify God in the midst of it all.

So many times I had preached about sinking, but couldn’t testify about the experiential aspect of being lifted. So in my head, I began to remember the hymnologist who said when I was sinking deep in sin, far from the peaceful shores, very deeply stained within sinking to rise no more, but the master of the sea heard my despairing cry and from the waters He lifted me now safe am I. Love lifted me, when nothing else could help, love lifted me. Then my spirit was reminded, that He could have let me drown, but he didn’t.

God sent living angels with insurmountable strength to my rescue. When nothing else could help, God placed power in and through the hands of my fiancée and my member to lift their Pastor to safety. And so if today, if I have nothing, I know I have a testimony. For truly I can say that in the midst of losing every contact on my Blackberry, I made a stronger connection with the greater Connector. And so I am not worried or dismayed because I know that when nothing else could help, God’s love lifted me.
