The Gospel of John is often referred to as the “Gospel of Faith.” It depicts the life of Jesus the Christ in a manner that highlights many of his miracles as signs that pointed to the true character and being of who Jesus was; the Son of God. The writer, thought to be John, the Beloved Disciple, states the following in chapter 20, starting with verse 30,
Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
While evangelistic in nature because it first seeks to introduce the world to Jesus, the purpose of this gospel does not end there. The Gospel of John serves as an inspiration of faith to those who already believe, that we might live complete and abundantly in and through Him.
As we begin Lent 2012, may our hearts be renewed in faith as we explore this profound gospel. Let our hearts be prepared for an increase of faith as we discover the miracle that unfolds through the life of Jesus; the miracle of redemption and salvation. During day one, reflect earnestly on the wonder of the Word being made flesh and coming to live in our sin-filled world, to be an example to all of mankind. As if this sacrifice were not great enough, Jesus knew that his very own would not recognize him, nor would they embrace him, yet he came anyway. This is a love we cannot imagine and it is available to us, freely. It is a true gift to an undeserving world, proof that we are considered precious to a holy and perfect God.
Happy Ash Wednesday, my brothers and sisters in Christ! Let us spend the rest of this Lenten season reflecting on the true meaning of why Jesus Christ lived and died for us so that we can celebrate his resurrection with a renewed purpose and commitment to living for him. Lord, increase our faith! This is my heartfelt prayer for us all.
