Can you remember a time you did something you were tremendously ashamed of? Maybe you told an untruth? Or you may have taken something for yourself (or someone else) that you should not have? Maybe you were the orchestrator of another person’s demise or hurt- be it professional, social or financial? Or, maybe it is something else altogether… but YOU know. At the time, you were resolute in your actions- feeling that you were justified, or that you had no other choice. In hindsight, you realize that your actions were self-serving, ugly, mean, unnecessary and just plain wrong.
Oh, how I love the story of Peter, Jesus’ Chief Disciple. He was the first to confess Jesus as the Messiah, only to turn around and deny him- not once, but three times. Can you imagine? I admit that I can when I think of my own selfish deeds and mean words over and over again.
Thank God the story does not end there! Jesus was a willing sacrifice for all of our sins! HALLELUJAH!!! Peter could have wallowed in despair and depression, but he didn’t. Peter’s sinfulness was overcome through faith in Christ! He goes on to found the first Christian church in Rome and traveled widely preaching about Jesus.
We, like Peter, can overcome through Christ! Don’t be imprisoned, held back and depressed by past failures. Live on for the Lord!!!
