Word for Today– Open

Read- Isaiah 6:1-8

“In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple.”

In today’s passage we find the prophet Isaiah experiencing the moment when his eyes are opened and he sees God in all his glory for the very first time.  The question that comes to mind is why now, is Isaiah able to see God, as opposed to any other moment.  After all, we are speaking of Isaiah the prophet, a man who walked closely with God.

It is suggested that Isaiah’s ability to see God properly was due to the loss of his leader, King Uzziah.  Perhaps his relationship with his leader overshadowed his view of God.  Or in his grief and loss, his eyes were opened.  Nevertheless, we know that in the midst of this life moment, he saw God in all His glory. What he saw left him in awe and wonder.  It also allowed him to see himself clearly and recognize that he was a man of sin, unclean and unworthy.  It was then that he was able to be cleansed of his sin, at which time He was commissioned to do a great work for God.

When our eyes are opened to see how awesome and great God is, the appropriate response should be to realize how we pale in comparison because of our sin. However, this is not a cause for despair!  God can and will forgive us and cleanse us of all unrighteousness.  He will not stop there!  He will also call and assign us to do a great work for Him.  All we have to do is say yes.

Let us pray: Father, open my eyes today! I do not want anyone or anything to block the view. I want to see you high and lifted up, in all your glory.  With a humble heart, I come asking that you then cleanse me, call me, and then send me.  I will go, in Jesus, name, Amen.
