The Lenten Journey – Jesus Grew in Wisdom

Jesus Grew in Wisdom

Luke 2:52

In my son’s bedroom are the unauthorized pencil markings on a once pristine wall charting his growth. This 12-year-old gets excited seeing just how far he has shot up over the years and he joyfully anticipants the heights that he will reach.

Growing up is a part of our human experience and it should also be a part of our spiritual journey. Growth indicates movement, activity, stretching, development, maturity, transformation and change.

Spring is a time in which we “spring forward.” We anticipate growth. April showers bring May flowers. Most of us set our clocks forward in time. The hours of daylight are lengthened.

Lent is from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning lengthen. The season challenges us to intentionally lengthen our knowledge of the master.

Jesus was a learner. Luke 2:41-52 tells the narrative of Jesus as a boy of 12 conversing with the teachers in the Temple. He was teaching, listening and learning. In the New Testament Jesus is directly addressed as teacher numerous times. He is the master teacher who calls us to sit at his feet and learn of him. As disciples we wear the label learner. We have been instructed by Jesus to take his yoke upon us and learn of him.

Jesus has already set the curriculum for us to follow. Our duty is to remain life-long learners.
