The Lenten Journey 2015 – Lent RSVP

2_21_2015_Katherine Ellington (2015)Isaiah 58:12

Lent opens an invitation for fasting and prayer. We disrupt our eating plans and social calendars pushing for more time in worship, Bible study and prayer. We reach for an inner spiritual practice with fasting and prayer. Whether a first time effort or another encounter each time is a new experience as we aim to focus inward.

Throughout the Scripture fasting refers to abstaining from food for spiritual purposes…*

In solitude, self-reflection allows time and space for attention. We build an awareness of forces draining the quality of our lives. We can move against emotions controlling improper behaviors. We can push for breakthroughs.

In fasting and prayer we also focus on our collective responsibility especially for those who are most vulnerable. We press against injustice and oppression doing great harm in society. We can become empowered by the love of God to work together in shaping a better world.

Dear God:

Let us RSVP to begin a new journey in fasting and prayer. As we move through Lent help us to disable old ineffective ways. Renew our minds; empower new habits for a healthier life. Lead us on a path in faith and community with purpose for the days ahead.

I committ to sacrificing sugar and white flour, which induces sluggishness followed by procrastination, followed by ineffectiveness, followed by hopelessness followed by weakness followed by fearfulness, followed by anger. God help,,
