This is Your Wake Up Call!

The Lenten Journey 2015 – A Prescription for a Good Night’s Sleep

TBowen2” I will lift up my eyes to the hills— From whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel Shall neither slumber nor sleep.”

(Psalms 121:1-4 NKJV)

Stress. It can affect your health. It can cause you not to eat or to eat too much. It can cause you to lose sleep at night. It the midst of the pressure from stress, the typical first response is to look for the best source of relief. We turn to others to give us advice, seek solace in people and material things for comfort. These sources are only temporary, at best, when we look to them for peace. There is one place we can look that will never fail us. We can look to God.

In Psalms 121, the psalmist asks the question “Where does his help come from?” only to answer immediately that his help comes from the Lord. He then goes on to describe the Lord as the creator of everything, which is a declaration of the Lord’s power. Like the Psalmists, who upon reflecting on the Lord’s power, realizes that this same god will protect and keep you even during the late night hours, we too must come to rest in the knowledge of how great and mighty God is when compared to anything or anyone else. In fact, there is no comparison because the Lord made it all.

If our all-powerful, all-knowing, all-mighty God does not sleep or slumber, let this be our cue to rest. After all, there is nothing we can do to help God and we certainly cannot be God. The answer to our peace is to look to the Lord as the source of our aid in all that we do and trust in His sovereignty to work on our behalf.

Instead of counting sheep, we will find rest in counting the many times God has made a way for us and rejoicing one by one in the numerous attributes He has that speak to His power. When we do, our peace will come and so will our rest.
