The Lenten Journey 2015 – Haters and Speculators

march252011_reina John 7:25-53

In some common vernacular, a “Hater” is someone who simply can’t be happy for another person’s success. There are three common causes of “hating”… low self-esteem, jealousy, and lack of knowledge/understanding. To speculate, assume, or conjecture is to reach a conclusion or opinion of a subject or situation without sufficient evidence. We have all encountered haters whether against us or someone else; and quite possibly if we haven’t ‘hated’, we have speculated at some point about a person or situation that we may have had little to no real information about.

Jesus was sent to live on earth to experience life as we know it, and to bear our sins on the cross so we could be forgiven. God loves us THAT much! This is why no matter what we encounter in this life, the Bible offers a relevant Word. In John 7, Jesus experienced both Haters and “Speculators.” Did it stop Him from doing that for which He was sent? Did he cower or even hesitate as the Haters questioned who he was? Not one bit.

While the Speculators wanted to believe and maybe even receive the blessings Jesus was offering, after some arguing – and even some cursing – they easily cowered to the Haters; and since the Haters and Speculators couldn’t come to an agreement, they called a “silent truce” and everybody just went home. Unfortunately they missed out on their drink from the rivers of living water. They forfeited the gift of the Spirit that they were to receive later.

There will always be Haters and Speculators, but we don’t have to let them keep us from receiving the promises of God. Stay on task – stay on purpose for God – and don’t let the Haters and Speculators cause you to miss your blessings.
