The Lenten Journey – Notes on Forgiveness

image1John 8: 1-20 (MSG)

In the Mount of Olives Jesus engages with leaders and community in a region where there is overwhelming conflict regarding Mosaic laws. One significant argument was about the power of written and oral interpretation. An early morning court case is opened against a woman accused of adultery. The leadership questions Jesus on the matter. In response Jesus bends down, writes on the ground and then says “the sinless one among you, go first: throw the stone.” He then bends down again writing more in the dirt. The woman is forgiven and set free. Jesus is then met with more pressing questions.

A few notes on forgiveness:

• The power of forgiveness involves asking important moral questions.
• Mercy, compassion and truth enable forgiveness.
• Forgiveness pivots on fairness and justice.
• Individual acts of forgiveness are often life changing.
• Forgiveness empowers new beginnings for individuals and communities.

Prayer

We pray about the uncomfortable, but necessary ongoing work of forgiveness in our lives. Open our hearts and minds to forgiveness as an act of love. While we ask questions, we confess our sins. As Jesus teaches us we pray to humbly forgive so that we may also be forgiven. Let us bear witness to new life.
