The Lenten Journey 2016 – Some Things I’ve Learned from Jesus Christ

John 13:1-17

As I meditated on the set of scriptures, John 13:1-17, I allowed myself to seek out what I can learn from Jesus Christ. I read it over and over, and in varies versions; KJV, NKJV, Amplified, NIV, NLT, and The Message, etc., and I came up with some things that I’ve learned from Jesus Christ. Allow me to explain.

First, I learned from Jesus, I should accept Him and I should have understanding as to why He will come to cleanse me. John13:6-8 states, “6 Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, “Lord, are You washing my feet?” 7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.” This makes me recognize through His teaching Peter, that I should accept His cleansing and if I don’t currently understand what or why something is happening, an understanding will come. I should be cleansed and be patient.

Second, I learned, that Jesus wants a personal relationship with me. John 13:8 states, “8 Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.” Jesus wants me to know that I can have a relationship with Him if I allow Him to do His part. He wants me to know that if I don’t allow Him to be Him, I will not have a part of Him. No one sidedness. It’s about us. Our relationship is not all about me! I should allow Him to be and I should be inclusive.

Third, I learned, that Jesus wants me to show others how He served and to live by His example. John 13:15-17, states, “15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. 16 Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.” Jesus never wants me to keep how He serves me to myself. He wants me as a Christian, to not only serve, whosoever. He wants me to set an example for whosoever how to serve whosoever. Jesus has truly set in place examples of how serving should be done. I should serve and teach.
Read John 13:1-17 for yourself and learn what you can from Jesus Christ this Lenten season.

Good and gracious God, thank you for the life of Jesus Christ. Please continue to allow Jesus to cleanse me when I need to be cleansed and how to be patient. Please continue to allow a relationship that gives me a part of Jesus and that I need to be inclusive with Jesus. Please continue, Lord, to show me your way to not only serve whosoever, but also to teach, whosoever how to serve. From within my heart, in the name Jesus, I pray. Amen.
