“But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.”

James 1:22(NLT)

We all know “that” person who can quote the Bible line and verse but when it comes to putting it into practice, that’s a whole different story. They can tell you everything the preacher said, but show no signs of putting the word to practice. They profess their love for Christ, say they love him, but it’s not evidenced in their actions. They function as if memorizing the scriptures or attending service somehow gets them a pass into the Kingdom of God. Not so.
Verse 22 of James, Chapter One says these types of individuals are only fooling themselves. God is not impressed.
In order to live Godly, one must do Godly things as outlined in the Bible. Their lack of action shows that while they heard the word, they failed to let it sink in deep and lead to change. It’s like wiring with a short circuit, something prevented the word from becoming action.
Maybe, they rationalized that God didn’t really mean what God said God meant. He was just offering an example. Or maybe they interpret the word to be for “those other people,” but not applicable to their lives. Perhaps they’ve allowed themselves to justify their disregard for the Word by focusing on the other good things they do. Whatever the reason, it is faulty. In order to live for God, you must do what God says to do as outlined in His word.
Don’t be fooled. Don’t let “that person” be you. Read God’s word actively asking “How do I apply this to my life?” Listen for God’s instructions. Then, just do it! God won’t steer you wrong. He’s on our side, cheering us on to victory!

Let us Pray: Dear Lord, help me to be a doer of your word and not just hearer. My desire is to live for You. Lord, change me.
