This is Your Wake Up Call!

The Lenten Journey 2018: Don’t Force It!

FullSizeRender“So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.”
Romans 12:1-2 MSG

“It Doesn’t Fit, So Don’t Force It”

Living for God is not always comfortable. Our world, as we know it, is often in direct opposition of what Godly living is supposed to look like. If we’re not careful, we can begin to think there is something wrong with us because our views and practices just do not fit in with the mainstream. That’s ok. It’s actually how it should be.

Our verse today finds the Apostle Paul admonishing the Christians of Rome not to conform or shape themselves by the design of the world, but to instead look to God for their template for living right. The Message bible says it in such a plain, easy to understand fashion.

“Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out.”

Our role as disciples of Jesus Christ is to follow hard after God, allowing him to shape our heart and mind in His image which leads to behavior that is pleasing to Him. Our ever-increasing relationship with Him should be our single focus. From this focus, the rest of those things concerning our well-being will be tailored.

So if you don’t fit with the world, rejoice! You’re not supposed to fit because we signed on to live for God, which requires a whole new template. In fact, your challenge should be to examine yourself, asking God, “Where do I fit in with the world?” As He answers, search the scriptures for guidelines of God’s way of living and allow yourself to be renewed.

So don’t force it…allow it to be renewed!

1. The world’s way is not God’s way. Don’t strive to fit in.

2. We must allow ourselves to be renewed in our thinking. This will then shape our actions.

3. God will facilitate the change as we yield to Him.

Abba God, I stand before you asking that you renew my thinking to Your way of living and thinking. I am called to influence the world for the kingdom of God, not to fit in. I won’t force the fit because I want to be more like You. Transform me, God.
