This is Your Wake Up Call!

The Lenten Journey 2018: Keep the Gates Up!

Keep the Gates Up!

“Starting a quarrel is like opening a floodgate, so stop before a dispute breaks out.”
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭17:14‬ ‭NLT‬‬

The job of a floodgate is as the name suggests: it is the gate that keeps excess water, the flood water, back not allowing it to impact the area around it. A floodgate or dam is often the only thing that stands between the water and the surrounding communities.

It is often the difference between safety and destruction; life and death. Even the slightest breach can mean utter devastation not because of the size of the breach but because of the impact it has on the entire structure. A small fracture, under the force of the waters it holds, will bring the entire structure down in pieces.

Imagine the impact of the actual door were opened, allowing waters to come pouring out! With nothing to contain it, the water would overtake everything in it’s sight.

This is what the writer of Proverbs 17 compares starting an arguments as being like opening a floodgate. Once you start it, you do not have control of the direction it will go or the damage it will cause. The end can be devastating.

God desires that we pursue peace at all cost. Which means there will be times when we have to give up our right to be right, understanding that to pursue our own way could lead to destruction. We have to be wise, choosing to let God lead our choices and actions. This way we act with purpose and in a manner that will bring life.

Lets pray: Father, help me to pursue peace at all cost, choosing to not start fights but to avoid them. Help us to look for solutions and Your glory, in all what we do.
