This is Your Wake Up Call!

TheLenten Journey 2018: Choose Wisely

The Choice is Yours
“….because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever!”

Romans 1:25 NRSV

IBW_Evita-3_8x10There is a saying which states “You can lead a horse to water but you cannot make him drink”. The point of the phrase is no matter how much a person is provided with what they need, you cannot force them to accept it. As in the text, truth meaning God’s person and word is like the water. Those who hear it can need it but if they do not want to accept it, no matter how bad we want it for them, if they do not want it for themselves, they will not receive it.

In his address to the church in Rome, the Apostle Paul teaches about the ungodly and unrighteous. They have been exposed to the truth of who God is. Yet rather than accept the truth, they want to continue in their immoral lifestyles. They want to continue to live life by their choosing rather than following God.

As a result, God turned them over or allowed them to be given over to the desires of the flesh. The truth has been made known to them. Yet rather than believe the God they cannot see, they have created their own forms of god. They would rather believe the gods they created in the likeness of man, birds and animals than believe in God, Creator of all.

At times, it is easy to think we are better than those Paul teaches about to the Roman church. However, all of us have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

We have tried to live as we desire to live not thinking about the consequences. We have chosen to entertain things we shouldn’t have outside of the will of God. We all have experienced moments where we have tried to plead ignorance about choices and behaviors we know are contrary to the word and will of God. Though we may try to plead ignorance, we do not fool God.

Overall trying to choose another god leads to disobedience and confusion. As God did to the unrighteous, He took his hand off them. If we do not want to be the one whom God allows things to be removed out of our lives, we must choose to give ourselves over to God, His truth and His righteousness. We must choose righteousness over unrighteousness.

1. We must die to our flesh to accept of the truth of who God is and God’s word.
2. Choosing worldly behaviors creates confusion and disobedience in our lives.
3. We must make the choice daily to live holy and worthy of the calling of God.

Let us Pray: Almighty God, Our Redeemer, forgive us of the times we have allowed our minds to be tricked into choosing to please the desires of the flesh rather than following You. We have been given the power of choice and we should choose to believe and follow You always. Lord, increase our faith to believe the truth. Help us not to be deceived by what we can see that we choose to miss out on what we cannot see and that is You. In Jesus’ name we pray Amen.
