The Lenten Journey 2018: Cleansing Body and Soul, Cleaning Up Our Act in a Toxic World.

DON’T FORGET, DON’T QUIT, AND DON’T TURN BACK

LDSwett And so, dear brothers and sisters who belong to God and are partners with those called to heaven, think carefully about this Jesus whom we declare to be God’s messenger and High Priest. 2 For he was faithful to God, who appointed him, just as Moses served faithfully when he was entrusted with God’s entire house. 3 But Jesus deserves far more glory than Moses, just as a person who builds a house deserves more praise than the house itself. 4 For every house has a builder, but the one who built everything is God. 5 Moses was certainly faithful in God’s house as a servant. His work was an illustration of the truths God would reveal later. 6 But Christ, as the Son, is in charge of God’s entire house. And we are God’s house, if we keep our courage and remain confident in our hope in Christ.

 Hebrews 3:1-6 (NLT)

In the current cultural, political, and even spiritual climate, for some Christians it can be challenging to maintain a level of faith that causes us to not drift, waver, or fall back into old familiar beliefs, habits and ways. This is especially true as our society continues to approve, glamourize and even legalize things that are counter to what God desires for us.

In the first few chapters of the book of Hebrews, we find the unknown author reminding the recipients of his letter of Jesus’ supremacy, sacrifice, and grace. Due to severe persecution, they were considering abandoning Christianity and returning to Judaism. Sometimes “when the going gets tough, the tough get going”, but we know the race is given to those who hang in there.

The book of Hebrews is a reminder of the blessings of grace and the benefits of faith. In this age of constant negative news, blatant racism, sexism, classism, abuse, misuse, injustice, and #metoo, just to name a few… let us not forget all Jesus has done on our behalf as a faithful Son of God. Don’t forget, don’t quit, and don’t turn back.

Remember these things…
• Nothing we experience is beyond Jesus’ ability to help us, for He himself suffered and was tested before He gave the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf. (Heb 2:18)
• Jesus, our brother (Heb 2:11-12) is faithful to God, our Father (Heb 3:2) who created us, who has plans for us, and who will never leave or forsake us.
• God is the builder, Jesus is the chief steward (our manager and caretaker), and we are God’s house if we remain confident and hopeful in Him (Heb 3:6). You can best believe God’s house will be well taken care of!
• Come what may in this environment, God’s truths are unchangeable; so stay connected to the source.

Let us Pray:

Father God, our creator, builder, lifter, and sustainer, we honor and glorify you. Thank you for your Son, Jesus, and the tremendous sacrifice He made on our behalf. Thank you for being our strength, shield, source, and supply even in toxic times and environments. Please help us to always remember you are with us, and for us, no matter how challenging the situation, and that it is with Your strength that we can remain faithful, not quit, and not turn back. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
